Each Rank is given by a Governor as a promotion for attacking enemy ships and cities. Each country has their own ladder of ranks for the player to climb, so the player could be a duke with Spain, while remaining a lowly captain with the French. Even if you later work against a nation's interests, your achieved rank will not go down. For example, you achieve the rank of Duke with Spain but you want to get the same rank with the English as well. You start attacking ships, and you have a bounty placed on your head by the Spanish. When you retire, however, the stated rank will still be the highest you ever achieved with that nation, not your rank with them at retirement. Governor's daughters have a minimum rank required to take them to the ball.

Ranks and the bonuses they grant:

Letter of Marque[]

Captain[]

Crew recruitment becomes easier in that nation's taverns as more men will be available than before. The Player can now dance with Plain Governor's daughters.

Major[]

Repairs in shipwrights of the same nationality become cheaper.

Colonel[]

Merchants of the same nation will have more goods to sell you. The Player can now dance with Attractive Governor's daughters.

Admiral[]

That nation's shipwrights offer cheaper ship upgrades.

Baron[]

Crew recruitment gets even easier from that nation's taverns, and the player gains another 50 acres of land. The Player can now dance with Beautiful Governor's daughters.

Count[]

That nation's shipwrights do ship upgrades for free, and the player gets another 50 more acres.

Marquis[]

Merchants from that nation will sell even more goods, and the player gets another 100 acres of land.
